Volunteer at STGSB Oyster Gardens This Week
Six locations, one mission — help restore the Great South Bay's oyster population.
One mature oyster can filter 50 gallons of water a day — and this summer, Save the Great South Bay is working to plant 225,000 of them. You can help by volunteering at one of their community oyster gardens along the South Shore. No experience needed — just show up and the crew will walk you through it.
Volunteers pull oyster-filled milk crates from the water, hose them down, count and measure the baby oysters, then return the crates. You never go in the water, and you can come for one session or every one. Saltaire, Oakdale, Babylon, Brightwaters, Amityville, and Bay Shore locations this week.

Long Island Conservation Alliance Launches Public Health & Environment Program with Stony Brook University
It’s a research initiative exploring the direct connections between environmental conditions and community well-being across Long Island's 8 million residents.
Through a partnership with Stony Brook University's Program in Public Health, LICA will host two MPH practicum students during the upcoming academic year. Their research will focus on three critical areas:
Groundwater Quality
Pollinator Decline
Climate-related Health Risks Facing the Region.
It's the kind of work that makes the invisible links between the land beneath our feet and the health of our communities a little more visible — and a lot more actionable.
The partnership reflects a growing recognition that conservation outcomes and public health outcomes are inseparable. Clean water, healthy ecosystems, and thriving pollinator populations aren't just environmental goals — they're public health priorities. LICA plans to share findings as the research develops.
