One mature oyster can filter 50 gallons of water a day — and this summer, Save the Great South Bay is working to plant 225,000 of them. You can help by volunteering at one of their community oyster gardens along the South Shore. No experience needed — just show up and the crew will walk you through it.

Volunteers pull oyster-filled milk crates from the water, hose them down, count and measure the baby oysters, then return the crates. You never go in the water, and you can come for one session or every one.
