Teen Conservation Ambassadors at Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary

Hands-on conservation for teens who want to do more than read about it.

If the teen in your life cares about the environment, here's a way to turn that into something real. The Teen Conservation Ambassadors program at the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary in Oyster Bay connects young people ages 13 to 18 with hands-on conservation work right here on Long Island.

Ambassadors attend meetings and events, work alongside conservation professionals, and take on projects that protect and improve local habitat.

Neighbors planting a new native community garden, illustrating ReWild Long Island's Community Gardens Program

Want a Free Native Garden in Your Neighborhood?

ReWild's Community Gardens Program gives volunteer groups free design help, native plants, irrigation and signage. Apply by December 15.

ReWild Long Island has opened applications for its 2027 Community Gardens Program. It's a two-year partnership that helps local volunteer groups build public gardens centered on native plants. The program doesn't hand out cash. Instead, ReWild brings what most community groups find hardest to pull together on their own:

  • Professional garden design and installation consulting

  • Native plants, irrigation materials and custom signage

  • Expert guidance on maintenance and weeding

  • Help building local engagement and community support.

If your library, school, church, park group or civic association has been eyeing an empty patch of ground, here's a way to turn it into a native garden, without having to raise the money for plants yourself.
