Lingua Franca is a tender, quietly devastating film about Olivia, an undocumented Filipina woman working as a home caregiver in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, who falls in love with her employer's grandson while navigating the constant threat of deportation. Written and directed by Isabel Sandoval — who also stars in the film — it's one of the most quietly powerful American films of recent years.
Sandoval is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary American independent cinema, and this is the kind of intimate event that makes the CAC unlike anywhere else on Long Island.
