There's something special about watching the full moon rise over open fields on a warm August evening. The Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt and the South Fork Natural History Museum (SOFO) are co-sponsoring a leisurely-paced hike through the open-field trails to catch the Full Sturgeon Moon as it climbs above the horizon.
August's full moon gets its name from the Native American fishing tribes who regularly caught sturgeon during this time — and it's known for appearing with a reddish tint as it rises through the sultry late-summer haze. This is a relaxed, memorable way to spend a Friday evening outdoors.
