The Wings 2 Roots kids birding series at Planting Fields Arboretum continues this July, with another hands-on session for young naturalists ages 5–12 presented by the CI Bird Sanctuary.

Each session in the series builds on the last, giving kids a progressively richer understanding of bird habitats, behavior, and conservation. Whether your child is joining for the first time or continuing from the June session, this is an accessible, engaging morning in one of Long Island's most beautiful outdoor settings.

Session #2 - Not all dangers to birds come with wings and claws. Join the CI Bird Sanctuary for a hands-on morning of outdoor discovery where young naturalists become citizen scientists as they investigate two surprising threats to bird habitats: invasive plants that crowd out the species birds depend on and invisible pollutants that quietly impact the food and water birds rely on. Together, we’ll explore Planting Fields to spot these threats up close, compare habitats side by side, and add observations and discoveries to our field journals. Best of all, participants will discover how people of all ages can help protect the birds and habitats they love.

This is a drop-off program. Guardians are encouraged to stay on-site during the duration of the program and explore the beautiful grounds!

When: Wednesday, July 8, 2026 | 10:00am–12:00pm
Where: Planting Fields Arboretum, 1395 Planting Fields Road, Oyster Bay NY
Cost: $25

Grab your binoculars and your curiosity! Wings 2 Roots is led by the Centre Island (CI) Bird Sanctuary and is a three-part nature series for young explorers, set on the beautiful grounds at Planting Fields. Each session blends hands-on classroom activities with guided nature walks, connecting kids to the birds, plants, and ecosystems right in their own backyard. Along the way, naturalists will uncover what birds truly need to thrive, explore the forces that threaten their habitats, and discover the real ways they can make a difference.
