What does a bird actually need to survive? That's the question at the heart of Wings 2 Roots, a kids birding workshop series presented by the CI Bird Sanctuary at Planting Fields Arboretum.

Join the CI Bird Sanctuary for a hands-on morning of outdoor discovery where young naturalists ages 5-12 become citizen scientists as they explore the essentials of a healthy bird habitat through wildlife observation and interactive learning.

We’ll meet some of Long Island’s most beloved feathered residents in the Education Center, then head outside to explore the bird sanctuary feeders and search for signs of what birds need to thrive. Along the way, participants will start their own field journal to document observations, sketches, and discoveries — because great scientists write things down!

Wings 2 Roots runs as a recurring series through the summer, so this is a great entry point for kids who want to keep exploring.

This is a drop-off program. Guardians are encouraged to stay on-site during the duration of the program and explore the beautiful grounds!

When: Wednesday, June 24, 2026 | 10:00am–12:00pm
Where: Planting Fields Arboretum, 1395 Planting Fields Road, Oyster Bay NY
Cost: $25

Grab your binoculars and your curiosity! Wings 2 Roots is led by the Centre Island (CI) Bird Sanctuary and is a three-part nature series for young explorers, set on the beautiful grounds at Planting Fields. Each session blends hands-on classroom activities with guided nature walks, connecting kids to the birds, plants, and ecosystems right in their own backyard. Along the way, naturalists will uncover what birds truly need to thrive, explore the forces that threaten their habitats, and discover the real ways they can make a difference.
