Save the Great South Bay's Saltaire oyster garden is one of six community sites along the South Shore — and this one comes with the added bonus of volunteering on Fire Island. Sunday mornings don't get much better than this.

Volunteers pull oyster-filled milk crates from the bay, hose them down, count and measure the baby oysters, and return the crates. You never go in the water, and no experience is needed. Come once or make it a regular weekend tradition.
