Sweetbriar Nature Center is a 55-acre preserve in Smithtown that cares for over 100 animals representing more than 50 species — and it takes a village to keep it running. With 150+ active volunteers, Sweetbriar relies on dedicated community members to support its mission of wildlife rehabilitation, environmental education, and land stewardship.
Whether you love animals, enjoy gardening, or want to help at community events, there's a role for you. Current volunteer opportunities include:
Animal Care & Rehabilitation Assistant — Help feed, clean enclosures, and assist with daily care of resident and rehabilitation animals. Must be 18+. Weekly commitment required.
Vivarium Assistant — Care for the inhabitants of the butterfly house and vivarium exhibits. Must be 15+. Weekly commitment required.
Gardener — Maintain gardens and grounds across the 55-acre preserve. Flexible scheduling.
Center Receptionist — Greet visitors, answer phones, and assist with front desk operations. Weekly commitment required.
Program Specialist — Support educational programs and nature walks. Flexible scheduling.
Special Events — Help set up, run, and break down Sweetbriar's popular community events. Must be 14+. No weekly commitment required — sign up as events arise.
Note: Age requirements vary by role. Most positions require a weekly commitment; Special Events, Grounds, and Program Specialist roles offer flexible scheduling.
