Volunteering is one of the most direct ways to end hunger on Long Island. Island Harvest relies on 60,000+ hours of annual service from volunteers to keep fresh, nutritious food moving to neighbors in need across Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Whether you come on your own, bring the family, or organize a corporate team, there's a role that fits. No orientation required — just show up in closed-toe shoes and an Island Harvest team member will get you started.
Ways you can volunteer:
Warehouse Volunteers — Build Senior Food Boxes, sort donations, and help distribute food to the network of pantries and soup kitchens. Shifts available Monday–Friday at facilities in Melville, Uniondale, and Calverton.
Food Distributions — Distribute food at community and mobile sites across Long Island — loading cars, assisting with home deliveries, and connecting with neighbors face-to-face.
Farm Work — Help plant and harvest fresh produce at Island Harvest's 2-acre organic Healthy Harvest Farm in Brentwood. A great outdoor option for individuals and groups.
Local Food Drives — Support community food drives at local retailers by handing out flyers and encouraging food and fund donations.
Office Support — Help with phone calls, mailings, and other office tasks — including some opportunities to volunteer from home.
Lend Your Talent — Are you a photographer, writer, marketer, or professional with skills to share? Island Harvest welcomes volunteers who can lend their expertise.
Volunteers must be 12+ years old (under 16 accompanied by a parent/guardian). Contact Tracey Griffin at [email protected] or 631-873-4775 x208 with questions.
